What is the NDIS?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is Australia’s national funding program for people with a permanent and significant disability. Who can access the NDIS?

- Residency rules: You must live in Australia and be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or Protected Special Category Visa holder.
- Permanence: Your disability must be permanent, meaning it is likely to remain with you for the rest of your life.

How do I apply?
The application process involves gathering evidence and making a formal application to the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA): [14, 15, 16]

What is an access request?
An Access Request is the official application package you submit to the NDIA to prove you meet the eligibility criteria. It consists of the formal application form accompanied by your medical documentation. What is a planning meeting?
Once your Access Request is approved, a planning meeting is the official conversation held to design your personalized funding plan: [35, 36]
- The meeting: You will sit down with an NDIS representative or an LAC to discuss your current situation, daily struggles, and personal goals. [37, 38, 39]
- Your goals: You will map out what you want to achieve, such as finding a job, learning to cook independently, or joining a local sports club.
- The outcome: The NDIA uses this conversation to calculate exactly how much funding will be allocated to your budget. [40]
What supports can be funded?
The NDIS funds a massive range of services, but every item must pass the “reasonable and necessary” test: [41, 42, 43, 44]
- Core supports: Funding for everyday help, such as support workers to assist with showering, cleaning, or community participation. [45, 46, 47, 48, 49]
- Capacity building: Funding for therapies to help you build independent skills, including speech pathology, occupational therapy, and psychology. [50, 51, 52, 53, 54]
- Capital budgets: Funding for assistive technology and equipment, such as customized wheelchairs, communication devices, or home modifications. [55, 56, 57, 58, 59]
- Exclusions: The NDIS will never fund everyday living costs that everyone has to pay, such as groceries, rent, movie tickets, or general electricity bills. [60, 61, 62, 63, 64]
Can family members help me apply?
Yes, you do not have to navigate the application process alone, and family support is highly encouraged: [65, 66, 67]
- Informal support: Family members and close friends can attend all planning meetings, help gather medical reports, and advocate on your behalf.
- Child representatives: For children under 18, a parent or legal guardian will automatically manage the NDIS application and funding.

How do I find providers?
Once your funding is approved, you can search for organizations or independent workers to deliver your services:
- The provider finder: Use the official NDIS Provider Finder Tool to locate businesses filtered by your local area.
- Registration types: You can choose between NDIS-registered providers (who meet strict government quality standards) or unregistered independent providers, depending on how your plan is managed.
